Around London & UK - June to July 2010

Here are some upcoming local events that are recommended to our local lads/ladies this Summer in UK.

Sotheby London - Victorian & Edwardian auction lot | Jul 13th 2pm

The Victorian and Edwardian era was one of the most fascinating periods in art history and one of the most diverse. This sale in particular presents the best of the varying styles and schools of artists, from PreRaphaelitism in the mid nineteenth century to the work of the Newlyn artists and their followers in the early twentieth century. Many of the pictures have not been seen in public for many decades, including an exquisite charcoal drawing by John William Waterhouse entitled Flora made in preparation for his large painting Flora and the Zephyrs.

Unknown to modern biographers having been in a private collection for almost half a century, this drawing is one of a strong group of Pre-Raphaelite works by Rossetti, Millais, Stillman and Watts, which also includes a dramatic coloured chalk drawing by Dante Gabriel Rossetti of his model Alexa Wilding and a delicate portrait by George Frederick Watts of his adopted daughter Blanche

Update: 7th July 2010

A Turner masterpiece has sold for almost £30m - a new auction record for the British master. Joseph Mallord William Turner's Modern Rome - Campo Vaccino, fetched £29,721,150 at Sotheby's in London.

The painting was sold by a descendant of the fifth Earl of Rosebery, who bought it in 1878 while on honeymoon with his wife Hannah Rothschild.

The previous record for a Turner was £20.5m for a view of Venice, which went under the hammer in April 2006.

Other sights to See

So there you have it folks, I highly recommend visiting these areas this summer, and take in some of the sights for free or relatively low cost - and overall inject a bit of culture, atmosphere and most importantly all for the love of improving art, architecture and design.

We would also highly recommend enjoying a picnic at one of the open cinema screenings at Somerset house near embankement.

If there are some cultural art events you think we should include, please feel free to leave your comments and suggestions. See you around the London Thames sketching!
